You ARE what you think!

Imagine this scenario: a couple is looking for a nice house€¦in a good location€¦using a modest budget. They locate one on a prime piece of real estate, in what is perceived as an upper middle class neighborhood. The husband balks at the idea of biding for this house. He had been raised in a country that placed great emphasis on class structure. The wife, raised in a more liberal society, doesn€™t understand why they can€™t at least place an offer for it. They do and they win the bid and purchase the house. The husband€™s comment is €œI never thought I would live in a place like this€, meaning on a street in a neighborhood he perceives as being above his class. The wife€™s response, €œI never imagined we wouldn€™t!€

This is an example of perception and mental conditioning. From the moment we are born, our parents, family, teachers and immediate society (better known as our tribe) instill within our subconscious minds certain beliefs. We grow believing that we are bound by these beliefs until such time as something challenges us to think outside and beyond them. Perhaps this never happens and we remain on the same path as our Fathers and our father€™s father. If our upbringing has been positive and supportive and encouraged us to develop our own unique thought patterns, then this pathway can lead to continued enlightenment and positive fulfillment. However, as I so often see in my practice, so many of us have developed low self-esteem and just don€™t know how to break the bonds of negative beliefs.

The challenge becomes changing our thought process. The first step toward this is our own languaging. Are you undermining your own self-esteem with negative language? How often do you say to yourself €œI should be doing€¦.€? Your subconscious mind hears that you should be doing, whatever, and because you are not doing it, the subconscious mind interprets this as you being a €˜bad€™ person. Enough of these shoulds over time and you can imagine how much you have under minded your own self-confidence! Replace the should with could and notice the positive difference in your thoughts and subsequent actions!

We limit ourselves by imposing our own thought prison. Next time you are faced with a decision of whether you can do something or not, instead of saying to yourself, €œI have never done that before, so why would I be able to do it now?€, say instead €œI have never done that before, so let€™s do it!€. Notice I didn€™t say €œso let€™s give it a try€. Never just try to do something€¦you immediately set up an escape route for failure. Instead, always approach something positively€¦I am losing 10 pounds; instead of I will try to lose 10 pounds. Think positively, and positive actions will result. Think negatively, and you are in danger of entering the negative vortex. I call it the negative vortex because once on this path, you begin to spin out of control€¦always seeing, thinking and feeling the negative. You spiral down into a negative prison of your own thoughts, and indeed it is very difficult to climb out!

You ARE what you think! Be aware of your negative thoughts and negative speech. That is the first step toward changing. Be aware€¦then you will begin to automatically reverse the negativity, and watch what a difference it can make in your life!
