The Rebel in You…good or bad?
Are you a rebel? I have just had a session with a client who is 82 years old and who is a rebel. He has developed this tendency to question/defy authority as a means of survival, and it has worked beautifully for him. I often find that rebels are stubborn. This man is definitely stubborn and readily admits it. He is in fact proud of it…it has stood him in good stead most of his life. I am amazed when I look at him that he is truly 82 years old…he looks to be in his late 60’s and is more spry and mentally alert than many a 40 year old I have worked with. BUT…he is finding it difficult to set aside his stubbornness even in a potentially life threatening situation. The only person he is rebelling against is himself, and he cannot seem to stop himself. Some ingrained habits are definitely difficult to break. Are you a rebel? Ask yourself if it is still serving you well, or is the rebel in you self-sabotaging and impeding your positive efforts to move forward and realize your highest potential. Often rebels keep such a tight grip upon it because to release this attitude would mean to expose a vulnerability they have difficulty acknowledging to themselves let alone letting others see. Our greatest human instinct is to resist change even if it can jeopardize our very survival. So examine the rebel in you and determine if it is good/beneficial and still helping you move forward, or is it in fact just stubbornness that is holding you trapped in negative beliefs and behaviours. Perhaps a change is in order!
